Living Room Designs

Since we multi-task in the living room, our designs must accommodate for such tasks, and at the same time, offer a room for comfort and the best furniture placement than any other room in the house.

Let’s consider all the things we use the living room for… we watch TV and DVD movies, we sit, eat, enjoy family, entertain friends, play games, listen to music, read a book, sew & crochet, and more.

Because of the many different uses in a living room the furniture must also cater to these uses.  Let’s consider all the furniture that may be needed… sofas, loveseat, lounge chairs, accent chairs, cocktail tables, end tables, TV stands, and entertainment centers.

Of course, your living room design may function differently than your neighbors.  Perhaps your daughter plays piano and will need to consider the piano placement in the room.

Or perhaps your son plays chess and will need a chess table placed in the floorplan.  Maybe part of the living room will be used for playing poker on the weekends.  Your furniture and the general layout of the furniture is an important aspect in living room design.

When planning for living room furniture, first and foremost, do not purchase your furniture without measuring the space first.  Next, consider how many conversational groupings (seating arrangement) will be needed in the space.  If the room is large, you may have to consider 2 or 3 conversational groupings within the space.

Your living room design layout will start with a focal point, which is usually a fireplace, large picture window or bay window.  Place your conversational grouping in the area of the focal point.

Your conversational grouping will start with the most dominant piece, or the sofa, and follow with the smaller pieces, like the lounge chairs, end tables, cocktail table, etc.
