Upholstery:
The key to great sofas, Chairs, Recliners and More
Your living room will of course include upholstered pieces, which is the all-inclusive name for seating that has fabric or material on it. This includes your sofa, chairs, benches, stools, and recliners.
And the key here is to, remember, have good balance, unity, pattern, texture, and color in the room. Not all pieces need to be upholstered. Mix in different textures for interest. A rattan or bamboo chair works well with an upholstered sofa, say leather or chenille.
Perhaps your sofa has a mix of fabric, wood and wrought iron. Try using a glass and metal cocktail table. The mix of texture really heightens the interest and gives such an impact to the entire ensemble.
In selecting your fabric for your upholstered piece, of course, color is a significant element. But there are many other elements to consider like, style, durability, resistance to dirt, textural qualities, color-fading, fire resistance and of course, price.
Many designers will collect sample swatches of fabrics to be considered for the color theme. Of course, if you did not hire a designer, you can go to your local fabric store and purchase small quantities of fabric to make your decision a bit easier.
Bring the swatches home and live with them a couple of days. Light always plays a part in your decision too, because fabric can look different in natural light versus artificial light.
You may be selecting fabric for two or three pieces of furniture. Be sure that the color, patterns and textures work well together. Select different textures for interest. Your sofa and chairs don't need to be the same style or fabric.
You can always pull your reference file out to help you in your selection. Remember, I asked you to visit the showrooms and cut out your favorite pictures from magazines. This is your guideline to follow and will help you to achieve that very same look in your space.
